• Organizing a database to avoid redundant information and inconsistent dependencies
• First Normal Form
  • Do not repeat groups
  • Use separate tables for sets related data
  • Use primary keys to identify each set
• Second Normal Form
  • Use separate tables for attributes that apply to multiple records 
• Third Normal Form
  • Eliminate fields that do not depend on the primary key
• Sometimes it is not practical to completely normalize a database.

Your task is to create a database that will keep track of all information about the students at a high school.  The database will be used by teachers and administrators to track student’s progress, attendance, schedule, benchmarks for success, activities, classes, grades, etc.  At a minimum, you should include the following information in your database: first name, last name, SSN, birth date, telephone numbers, address, classes taken, classes currently being taken, classes registered for, current teachers, grades, absences, tardies, student service learning hours, detentions, office referrals, teacher comments, GPA, ethnicity, gender, program, activities (sports, clubs, etc…), awards, plans after graduation, and reports of what they are doing after high school (college, working,…). You may need to include other information.
