• Structured Query Language (SQL) is a language for querying and manipulating databases
• SELECT statements retrieve information from the database
  • SELECT [Last Name], FirstName FROM tblNames
• INSERT statements add new records to the database
  • INSERT INTO tblInfo (Birthdate, Lname, Weight) VALUES (#10/11/1888#, 'bob', 185)
• DELETE statements delete records from a database
  • DELETE FROM tblEmployees WHERE ssn = '111-111-1111'
• UPDATE statements modify records in a database
  • UPDATE tblNames SET age = age+1 WHERE ssn = '111-111-1111'

SQL Tips

• SQL commands are not case-sensitive ... Use "SELECT" or "select"
• If the field name has a space, use brackets ([last name]) around the name in the statement
• If the field name is a keyword use brackets around the name in the statement

The questions refer to the following database table named StudentInfo with the four fields.  SSN and Name are text fields.  Graduation Year and GPA are number fields. BirthDate is a date field.

3.  Write a SQL statement to add a new person with the following information:  SSN = 123-45-6789; Name = "NewGuy"; Graduation Year = 2010; BirthDate = 4/16/1992; GPA = 4.0. 

4.  Write a SQL statement to delete all students whose Graduation Year is 2003.
